Anyone familiar with Tom Fazio knows he is the mastermind behind some of the most famous and critically acclaimed golf course design credits in the game’s recent history. Camp Creek lives up to his lofty advance billing and is consistently cited as one of Fazio’s most thought-provoking; aesthetically-stunning designs. Framed by sand dunes and native grasses; Camp Creek’s anatural edges contrast against its hyper-green fairways to create a surreal spectrum of color. Purists will dig that Camp Creek is a “core course;” meaning there are zero homes along its tees; fairways and greens. Camp Creek begins in a friendly enough; “how do you do manner;” what with a short par 4 sporting an airplane hanger-sized landing area. By the third hole; however; it is game on. The course’s first par 5; with water on the left; native-grassed dunes on the right; and a slight left-right routing is a prelude to what’s to come.  Numerous holes at Camp Creek stand out from the norm. The par-4 13th is a case in point. The shortish two-shotter calls for a pick-your-poison tee shot: lay up with an iron; or bust driver down a precariously risky center-left line. The dramatically-raised; wedding cake style green complex is the hole’s calling card. And the more a golfer bites off on the tee shot; the easier the approach is to negotiate. Camp Creek has gained a reputation as a “player’s” course; in large part due to its eye-popping slope rating of 152 (one of the highest in the state) from the 7;159-yard back tees.
