The Pocahontas Island Black History Museum, located on the historic Pocahontas Island in Petersburg, Virginia and a stone’s throw from the Appomattox River, was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. It is home to a treasure trove of artifacts and other historical items of interest that showcases over 200 years of Black history. Established in 2003 by Mr. Richard Stewart, a Black History and Civil War expert, Mr. Stewart delights in taking museum visitors on an oral journey of Black history in Petersburg, Virginia. The museum is a labor of love for him and he is passionate about preserving the history of the island for current and future generations.
