This was a good sandwich and the fries were fantastic! We tried both Geno's and Pat's and, while I preferred the sandwich at Geno's, both were delicious. I definitely recommend trying both and forming your own opinion (and get fries at Pat's, if you are only getting them at one place).

Go early and chat with the "old timer" locals having donuts at the tables. They'll give you restaurant suggestions for your whole visit!

Pat's King of Steaks® was founded by Pat Olivieri in 1930. Pat had a modest hot-dog stand at the base of the famous Italian Market in South Philadelphia.

One day he decided to have something quite different for lunch, so he sent for some chopped meat from the butcher shop. He cooked the meat on his hot dog grill, placed the meat onto an Italian roll, and dressed it with some onions. Just as he went to take a bite, a cab driver who ate a hot dog everyday asked what he had there. Pat said that it was his lunch. The cabbie insisted that Pat make him one.

"Hey.....forget 'bout those hot dogs, you should sell these." The steak sandwich was born. As the years passed, both employees and customers alike demanded change...cheese was added.

Pat's cheese steaks are fantastic! I can't compare to better illuminated Geno's, or any other local Phily cheese steaks, but you won't be disappointed.
Ordering is simple. Just say "wiz with" and you'll get the classic cheese steak with cheese wiz and onions or "wiz wthout" to skip onions.

Pat's cheesesteak was delicious--there's no denying it. However, it does pale in comparison to the delight of chowing down on a Geno's steak. Oh, and yes: everyone is super rude for no good reason. Hopefully you know exactly what you want the second the person in front of you is done or you'll get yelled at for being an idiot. Cool. Real cool.
