““Your Eco-Home Away From Home””
HI-Portland, Hawthorne Hostel is Portland’s original hostel, located in the bohemian Hawthorne District of Southeast Portland. The house that our hostel occupies was built in 1909. In 1984 it was transformed into the hostel it is today. Safe accommodation for independent travelers. We have 34 beds including 2 private rooms, 2 co-ed dorm rooms with men and women together, as well as segregated women’s and men’s dorms. We also have a full kitchen for guest use and welcoming common spaces. For the past quarter-century the Hawthorne Hostel has welcomed thousands of travelers from the United States and all over the world. We pride ourselves on our sustainable business practices which include and green roof, rain water collection and more. This year we even received Gold Certification from Sustainability at Work. Inside and on the property you’ll find brightly colored walls, mosaics, a custom built NW themed stage, a spacious backyard in the city and all the features that make us your eco-home-away-from-home. The Hawthorne Hostel is run by the Oregon Council of Hostelling International, a non-profit (501c3) organization. The Hawthorne Hostel is a member of the Hostelling International network of hostels. It’s mission is “To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and it’s peoples through hostelling.”
I booked a private room here for my 2 daughters and myself a week in advance and everything seemed fine. Then they call me at 10:30 the night before I'm supposed to arrive to tell me that they overbooked the private room and that I couldn't stay there. Then she suggests that I bring my young daughters to the coed dorm room. They even say specifically on their website that young children should not stay in coed dorms. I'm 3000 miles from home with a limited budget and no place to stay because everything remotely affordable is booked because tomorrow is Friday night. Unbelievably unprofessional and disorganized !!
Hi Shelly Jahnke, my name is Talbot Wallace and I'm the manager of the hostel. I understand your frustration and apologize for the mistake. We discovered that we were overbooked that night and called you immediately to see if we could work something out for you. Like my staff mentioned before, we are very sorry for the inconvenience and did have other rooms available for you for your stay during the next three nights. Anyone who knows the hospitality business knows that overbooking happens occasionally. That's not an excuse and I have a family as well, so I hate to see you have this problem. BTW- we did have a cancellation and I believe my staff called you that morning to reiterate the option. Once again, it was an honest mistake and I apologize for the inconvenience . Good luck and hope your visit to Portland wasn't ruined.
I stayed here about 2 years ago and I had a great time. Planned on staying only one night and ended up staying 3. Great location, easy access to all kinds of coffee shops, restaurants, and just a neat place to walk around and look at things. Would definitely stay here again!
