If you are an outdoors person and you are going to visit areas near to San Antonio, Texas, then the Government Canyon State Natural Area is a great place with more than 40 miles of hiking/biking trails.

There are many hiking programs that take place during the year and many landscapes that you can choose from, whether them be remote rugged canyon lands or gently rolling grasslands. But be aware of snakes, especially during the summer.

Since this is a gentle eco-system, this area is a partner to 'Leave No Trace Principles of Outdoor Ethics', which in simple words means respect the environment and don't leave any garbage behind you. Also do NOT cut any wildflowers or pick any little rocks to take with you. The best way to take the beauty of the park back home with you is via photos and videos. Therefore, do not forget to take your camera with you. The landscape is totally breath taking in some parts!

A great little state park to test your hiking metal and provide a nice weekend nature getaway from the San Antonio metro. There's also dinosaur tracks if you need motivation to do a more challenging hike. Beware of mosquitoes though.
