La Jolla Sea Caves

1325 Coast Blvd S, San Diego, California 92037 USA

“Experience seven breathtaking sea caves”

Located within the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, Just east of La Jolla Cove, the seven sea caves that make up La Jolla Caves are within a sandstone sea cliff about 75 million years old. They are named as follows, from east to west: White Lady, Little Sister, Shopping Cart, Sea Surprize, Arch Cave, Sunny Jim’s Cave, and The Clam’s Cave. Clams Cave is the only cave visible on land at Goldfish Point. To see the others, you'll need to be on the water in a boat or kayak. Sunny Jim’s Cave can be reached by a tunnel and stairway through The Cave Store. This cave was named by Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz. The cave's silhouette reminded him of a cartoon mascot for 1920s British Force Wheat Cereal. Clam's Cave is visible from Goldfish Point on Coast Blvd. To see the other caves, you need to be on the water. Sunny Jim's Cave can be visited from The Cave Store. The Cave Store is located directly above Sunny Jim's Cave via a tunneled stairway. For a fee, the public can access the cave. The store is a familiar landmark and sells curios, seashells, memoriablilia, and more. Parking is tight in the small parking lot. Additional parking is available west on Coast Blvd, as well as Prospect Street and other downtown streets. Near the Cave Store is a lookout point, which offers a wooden deck and benches. People can enjoy beautiful views of the San Diego coastline, the waters below filled with wild sea birds, kayaks and boats, and catch a glimps of the sea caves. The lookout point is a popular romantic spot. If you have a kayak, you can actually go within some of these caves. Sunny Jim's Cave can be reached by land. Exercise caution if kayaking or swimming nearby. The water can be rough at the cave inlets.
