Old Fort Jackson is a must-see National Historic Landmark offering weekend cannon firings year-round, and daily interactive programs scheduled March through October. Minutes away from Savannah's Historic District, visitors of all ages experience unique views of Savannah's riverfront skyline and the Talmadge Bridge while walking the grounds of one of the oldest brick fortifications along the East Coast.
Visited the fort (and Savannah) on a day trip out of Hilton Head Island.
Very much enjoyed the commentary and performance by the Confederate army re-enactor. He gave a great overview of the fort's history, and engaged the audience by getting 'volunteers' to help him demonstrate how quickly he could load and fire a Civil War era muzzle-loader, and how a gun crew operated a 'mountain howitzer'.
The performance was topped off with the soldier loading, aiming, and firing the howitzer himself (black powder only) - everyone jumped at the 'boom'!! Great views of the river and the city/port of Savannah from the tops of the parapet. Well worth the hour or so of our visit.
The Fort was interesting and the cannon firing was awesome. The area was well taken care of and the staff was courteous and very knowledgeable about not only the history of the fort, but also the surrounding areas.
We visited with a Girl Scout tour group. We had a fabulous solider! He interacted with our girls & kept them interested the entire tour. The tour was the highlight of our Savannah trip. Thanks for keeping history interesting.
Great place to visit and learn some history. Really enjoyed the soldier's performance and cannon firing.
