“The church in the rocks”

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic Chapel built into the mesas of Seddona, Arizona, which was inspired and commissioned by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude.

The first conception came to Marguerite Brunswig Staude in 1932 in New York City while observing the newly constructed Empire State Building. When viewed from a certain angle a cross seemed to impose itself through the very core of the structure. She wanted to build a structure that would glorify her Creator and in thanksgiving for all that her family had received. She traveled throughout Europe looking for the ideal location. She returned to the United States and while her and her husband Tony traveled through Sedona, she was struck by the beauty of the area and decided that this chapel should be built here. . “This would be a monument to faith, but a spiritual fortress so charged with God, that it spurs man's spirit godward".

Built on a twin pinnacled spur about 250 feet high, jutting out of a thousand foot red rock wall, "solid as the Rock of Peter" the building of the Chapel was completed in April 1956. Just the physical construction was a physical miracle, overcoming difficult conditions to construct this chapel.

Richard Hein was chosen as project architect, and the design was executed by architect August K. Strotz, both from the firm of Anshen & Allen. The chapel is built on Coconino National Forest land; the late Senator Barry Goldwater assisted Staude in obtaining a special permit

The chapel was completed in 1956.

The American Institute of Architects gave the Chapel its Award of Honor in 1957. In the sculptor's words, “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all men and be a living reality.”

In 2007, Arizonans voted the Chapel to be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona, and it is also the site of one of the so-called Sedona vortices.

The Chapel is one of the main tourist attractions in the Sedona area. It is open from 9am to 5pm daily and closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday and Easter.

One of the more special places I've visited in AZ. Parking is limited, but the views are great. Make a little donation while you're there! Perfect place to start your Sedona vacation.

way too touristy, takes away the spiritual feeling a church should have. great architecture....but plan on waiting in line to find a parking space.

One of the most beautiful buildings you're bound to see, and in the most unlikely of places. You might have a bit of trouble parking if you come on the weekend, but if you visit in the morning to watch the sun come up, it's incredible.
