“A once booming town”

The History of Texola dates back to the early 1900s. Before being named Texola, the town site had been called Texokla and Texoma. Because of its location near the 100th Meridian, the town was surveyed eight different times, which meant that some early residents lived in both Texas and Oklahoma without ever moving. Texola was originally part of northern Greer County until Beckham County was formed after Oklahoma gained statehood in 1907. A post office was established in the community on December 12, 1901 with Reuben H. Grimes serving as the first postmaster. In 1902, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad (later owned by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway) was built through the town. A weekly newspaper, the Texola Herald, began publishing in 1902 and continued to operate into the early 1920s. By 1909, Texola had two cotton gins as well as a corn and grist mill. The local economy was agriculturally-based and several businesses opened in the community.

This is not a ghost town. Yes, there are many abandoned house and buildings but there are also many residents.

Not much to see here. The food is great at the Windmill Restaurant and the RV Park is aperfect place to spend the night if you hit it just right.

pretty lame, we saw many other ghost towns on our drive that were much cooler. Not worth the time unless you have to pee anyway.

Quick mile drive off the highway to get a few pictures from the car. It's pretty amazing to see so many abandoned structures in various states of decay alongside houses where people still live.

The houses are on private but you can drive up and down the street to get photos. One of the locals mentioned that Texola currently has 38 residents!

Nice road to drive to
The ghost town has still some people live in, but ….
New building was built recently (a church) !
Don’t get disappointed, just drive through the “town” until the Texas border sign and Route 66 +/- 1 1/5 mile. You’ll be able to take some nice photos over there.
Definitely a stop worth
