When most people think of Oregon mountains, they think of Mt. Hood and the other high Cascade volcanos, but the Rockies also cross Oregon in the northeastern corner of the state where, combined with the Snake River, they form Hells Canyon, the deepest gorge in the United States, and one of the largest mountain wilderness areas. Much of that mountain wilderness lies within the 1200 square mile Wallowa Mountain range as part of the 360,000 acre Eagle Cap Wilderness, an area with scenic wild rivers like the Minam and Imnaha, 53 high mountain lakes, 540 miles of trails, granite crags, and steep-walled valleys formed by ancient glaciers. This is the country of Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce tribe, pioneers, trappers, explorers, and gold miners.
