“once used by prehistoric peoples”

Visitors enjoy picnicking, camping, backpacking, sightseeing, hiking, photography, bird watching, fishing, swimming and nature study. People should stay on designated trails, because maples have a shallow root system, and soil compaction from walking can damage the trees. Also, many natural hazards exist due to the steep and rugged terrain. Do not hike or climb on rocks or hillsides. Lost Maples State Natural Area covers 2,174.2 scenic acres in Bandera and Real counties, north of Vanderpool on the Sabinal River. Acquired by purchase from private owners in 1973 -1974, the site was opened to the public on September 1, 1979. Approximately 200,000 people visit the park annually. Archaeological evidence shows that this area was used by prehistoric peoples at various times. In historical times, which began with Spanish exploration and colonization efforts in the late 17th century, the Apache, Lipan Apache and Comanche Indians ranged over the land and posed a threat to settlement well into the 19th century.

Do you like photography ? Do you like hiking in absolute serene natural surroundings ? Do you like autumn ? Do you like to do backpacking, fishing, bird watching ? Are you somewhere close to Vanderpool, Texas?

The more YES you answered to the above question the more likely is to fall in love Lost Maples State Natural Area. No wifi, no internet, no civilization the deeper you get into the park the closer you get to nature. This is one of the best natural landscapes in Texas for those who love autumn colors and falling leafs. You pay a reasonable fee at the entrance of the park, and then you are free to discover the magic of the nature.

More than 2,000 acres of pure natural landscapes, beautiful old trees and as the name of the park states, many maples !!! Ideal place if you want to regenerate yourselves in nature and get rid off all the negativity and stress of everyday life, especially if you are living and working in a big city. Yet one more great chance to get some serious nature study, because the ecosystem there is complex and very interesting !

Thumbs up !!!!

We will definitely be going back! So much to see and so much to hike! We took the ranger's suggestion on which way to hike as a first timer, and are very glad we did! Very tough hike for a beginner, but worth every tear! Give yourself plenty of time, and bring plenty of water!
