“you'd be loony not to see it!”
This loon has for decades hooted down the claims of several newer, nearly-as-large rivals. At 20 feet tall, it was built in the early 1960s, paid for by the Vergas Fire Department, and dedicated to a deceased town postmaster (whose name was not Loon). It looks out over Long Lake, perhaps in search of a similarly over-sized mate. Vergas calls itself "Home of the Loon" and holds a "Looney Daze" festival each August, which is a wise time to visit a lakefront in northern Minnesota.
Travel Tip: Continue on HWY 228 toward Long Lake, the 20-foot-tall World's Largest Loon is located in Vergas Park.
