“a unique & intense turquoise lake”
Diablo Lake is a reservoir in the North Cascade mountains of northern Washington state, USA. Created by Diablo Dam, the lake is located between Ross Lake and Gorge Lake on the Skagit River at an elevation of 1,201 feet (366 m) above sea level. Diablo Lake is part of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project and managed by Seattle City Light. The lake is home to rainbow, cutthroat, brook, and the federally threatened bull trout. It is a popular recreational spot for kayakers and canoeists. The unique, intense turquoise hue of the lake's water is attributed to the surrounding glaciers that grind rocks into a fine powder that is carried into the lake through creeks. That fine powder stays suspended in the lake, giving the water its brilliant color. Diablo Lake Overlook Information from the National Park Service: Accessible parking, curb ramps and toilets available. A must see, with views of Diablo Lake, Davis, Jack, Pyramid and Colonial Peaks. Benches, interpretive signs and a geology display enhance your stop. Ravens ride on thermal breezes, while pikas whistle and scurry to hidden places. Please do your part in keeping these animals wild. Feeding wildlife is not only prohibited in the park but can cause harm to the animal and you.
Breathtakingly blue water! If you plan on camping in the Cascades, I recommend Colonial Creek Campground, which is just off the North Cascades Highway, and sits on the lake.
Diablo Lake and it's brilliant turquoise color is breathtakingly beautiful. If you are in the North Cascades it is not to be missed. If you are not up to hiking there is a fantastic scenic viewpoint just off highway 20, east of the lake.
A truly unique place and the surrounding area is amazing. We stopped here during our cross-country road trip. The water is such a unique color that you won't find elsewhere. Plus, you have the areas around the lake that are stunning. A must visit if you have the chance.
The place is just wonderful and the scene is simply breathtaking. The waters are like icy blue like the skies.
I camped here last September. Other than the horrible forest fire smoke it was one of the most memorable of a 6 week motorcycle/camping trip
