“at Wytheville Office Supply”
For almost 50 years, visitors have made it a "point" to see Wytheville's Main Street landmark. The late John Campbell Findlay (the original owner of Wytheville Office Supply) had the "Big Pencil" constructed in the early 60's. Made of metal, it is approximately 30 feet long. Over the years it has had a number of facelifts to keep it in pristine condition. Recently, in the Washington Post the syndicated comic strip "Zippy" by Bill Griffith, featured the "Big Pencil". Ty and Wayne Roop purchased Wytheville Office Supply in 1972 and have developed it into a large, multi-state outlet for everything from office supplies and office furniture to copiers. Ty is the daughter of the original founder, Campbell Findlay.
We are on a quest to get as many pictures with "big" things as we can. This was one of our favorites! Such a cute town too. Be sure to stop and have a hot dog at Skeeters just up the street.
What a great photo op! The town is small and cute! It is definitely worth getting off of I-81 to go through here. Also, the plus side is that if you continue on highway 11, you will be able to easily get back on the interstate. Enjoy!
Cool quick stop. The town is very cute too.
Would have been cooler if it was on the ground. The bottom of it is above the door...
Great photo op with the kids! Cute little town.
We stopped in Wytheville on Saturday night and stayed at the HIE. It is new and nice. We went to church at the Wytheville church of Christ near the high school. Fun friendly people. We showed up on potluck day, woot woot. We stumble across the big pencil. It was really cool. Definitely a great photo opp.
Good for a quick stop and to take some funny pictures.
The Main Street is very quaint. The Big Pencil is really big, good for photo ops. A fast stop.
Overall it was an okay stop. The pencil itself wasn't incredible, but I enjoyed the dual pencil/paint can combo from down the street. Convenient parking, BoA nearby, as well as a convenience store to stock up on other roadtrip needs.
If it's not too far off your path it's worth a stop.
