Take This Trip

Created by Grand County - March 22nd 2017

The mountains of Colorado are obviously a great destination for outdoorsy adventure... but if you're looking for a more relaxing getaway, don't write this region off! From hot springs and wineries where you can indulge in some of life's greatest pleasures, to scenic drives and boardwalks where you can appreciate stunning scenery without exerting too much effort, a trip here can be luxurious and low-key. Stay at a world-class historic resort for added comfort, and enjoy the fresh air and vacation vibes during your relaxing trip through Grand County, Colorado!

4.4

Estes Park, CO

Known as the first road through Rocky Mountain National Park, Fall River Road has plenty of history as well as great views. This road links Estes Park with Grand Lake, running right through the Rocky Mountains along the way. It is a bit less traveled than the more popular Trail Ridge Road, and it's not as paved, but it has some amazing views of wildlife and waterfalls along the way. There are plenty of places to stop off and take a quick hike, so this road would be a great day trip. The road is only one-way, so make sure to stop if you see any beautiful lookout points, because you won't be able to go back!

Grand Lake Boardwalk

Created in 1881 on Grand Lake, Grand Lake Boardwalk gives you a great view of the lake and offers plenty of fun activities for all ages. Take a trip back to the Wild West with historic hitching posts, beautiful old-style architecture, and more shops than you can shake a stick at. The boardwalk also has bars, restaurants, and a variety of galleries, so you will never run out of things to do. The shops all follow the Wild West theme, and you have a beautiful view of the lake-- what more could you ask for?

With rustic accommodations and delicious dining, Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa is a great place to splurge and stay on your trip. The ranch is environmentally friendly, with an in-house water filtration system, a successful recycling program, and geothermal heating. It has a guest lodge, cabins in the woods, and a cozy bunkhouse for you to choose from for your overnight accommodations. If that wasn't enough, this resort is home to a variety of restaurants AND a relaxing spa with a special "Cowboy Way" treatment.

Columbine Lake Trail

Taking you through Indian Peaks Wilderness, Columbine Lake Trail is a great way to get some exercise and take in some beautiful views. The trail runs about seven miles long, and is on the moderately difficult side, but it's a lesser-known hike, so you won't have to worry about crowds along the way. The views are breathtaking the entire way, with the best view at Columbine Lake at the base of Mount Neva. As you walk, you will see colorful wildflowers, verdant pine trees and bubbling mountain streams. Plan for about a four-hour round-trip.

Winter Park Winery

With unique wines all crafted onsite, Winter Park Winery is a fun stop for those looking to treat themselves after a day of exploring. The winery makes both red and white wines and has a cozy little tasting room. The wines are all unfiltered to maintain the best taste and feel while keeping the nutrients intact. If you can't get enough, the winery has a monthly "Wine Club" with wine shipments sent to your home. We suggest trying out the "Grateful Red"-- with a name like that, how could you not?!

Tavern at Tabernash

Located in historic downtown Tabernash, the Tavern at Tabernash is the perfect place to stop for food and drink on your Colorado adventure. The chef creates a unique mix of international appetizers, entrees, and (our favorite) desserts. The tavern is decorated to bring back memories of days of old, with a beer can collection, fishing memorabilia, and even old Olympic jumping skis. Take a night to splurge and eat like kings here-- trust us, you won't regret it. Menu must-trys include the meatballs made with antelope, boar, and venison, and the bacon steak.

Showboat's Drive By Pie

The name says it all- you have to check out Showboat's Drive By Pie! Located in Granby, the restaurant is famous for allowing you to simply drive up to their window and purchase a pie. From flavors like Killer Apple and Wild Maine Blueberry, you'll find something to suit everyone. The restaurant also has delicious Cinnamon Raisin Bread, and even offers an "Emergency Party Kit" that includes a pie cutter, forks, plates, and napkins for an impromptu picnic. Make sure to get there early, as they sell out pretty quick!

3.6

Hot Sulphur Springs, CO

Known as one of the nation's oldest hot springs resorts, Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa is a great place to stop and relax. The spa hosts 17 motel-style rooms with rustic furnishings and exposed wooden walls. They also have rustic cabins and apartments for rent. Admissions to the geothermal pools are included in your stay (day passes are also available), and the springs are open from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The resort also has an in-house spa offering hot stone massage, herbal and mud body masks, and even "Rain Drop Therapy."

Radium Hot Springs

Hidden away along the Colorado River lies Radium Hot Springs, another wonderful place to relax on your trip. It’s not developed, so it's a more natural experience than visiting Hot Sulphur Springs. The springs are a 20-minute hike from Mugrage Campground, and can also be accessed by raft or kayak. The primitive spring has a main pool that is 20 feet in diameter, as well as free primitive campsites in the surrounding area. Many people enjoy jumping off the high rocks into the water across the river. The best time to visit Radium is from summer to autumn, due to high snow run-off during the winter season.

With drive-by pie, relaxing hot springs, and beautiful park views, your trip across Colorado will be a healthy mix of the rustic outdoors as well as some relaxing indoor options. The whole family will find something great on offer in Grand County, so start planning today!
