Iconic Attraction

Our Take

The Golde Gate Bridge is an absolute stunner when viewed from around the city. Driving across it is a must-do experience for the trip to Sausalito alone... although the views from on the bridge might be obscured by Karl, the city's signature fog.

I'm obsessed with this bridge. I have a habit of anytime I go to San fran, I like to rent a bike from one of the wonderful touristy bike rental places and take it across the bridge to Salsalito. In Salsalito, there's a bunch of cute shops, places to eat, bars and you can jump on a ferry back across the bay. If you're a photographer, it's kind of a dream bridge because there's always dramatic fog... but, it's been photographed so many times, it's almost impossible to take a unique photo.

My favorite fact about this bridge: Before it opened in 1937, during its construction the city laid a safety net under the floor of the bridge. It was massive and stretched the length of the bridge. The net saved over 19 men from falling to their deaths. Those guys became part of a very exclusive club, known as the “Half-Way-To-Hell Club.” I love this bridge.

Lucky to get it on a clear day but if its foggy head up to mt tam and you may be able to get above the fog for a crazy cool view!

For the BEST experience, WALK across the bridge- the pedestrian walkway is on the Bay side or East side of the bridge. Other than the good cardio exercise, you get outstanding views of the Bay, of San Francisco, of Marin County and the Ocean. There's parking on the San Francisco side as well as the Marin County side. Fair warning- it gets very windy on the bridge so hold on to your hats, caps, and any loose items you wear. Make this a must do at least one time when you're in the area!

Obviously a sight to see, but remember: San Francisco is ALWAYS foggy. Feel lucky if you can see it on a clear day!

The bridge is iconic, so when you see it in person (as a tourist), it will almost definitely bring a smile to your face. Chelsea Koglmeier is right, the fog makes the bridge look very dramatic, but the pictures you take in front of it will look identical to a bunch of the same photos your friends have posted on Facebook over the years. Take the picture, anyways!

Take a walk across the bridge and look for sea lions in the water. Truly a place to remember for a lifetime.

A truly impressive and awe-inspiring sight to experience, and certainly a must-see for any tourist. The bridge is often veiled in fog, but from different angles one could catch otherworldly views of it. Don't forget there is a pedestrian walkway to enjoy on the bridge itself, as well as countless options to rent bicycles or scooters to be part of the magic.
