Our Take

While it may not be as well known as some of its flashier Smithsonian siblings, the National Postal Museum, dedicated to America’s postal history and philately (the collection and study of postage stamps), is no less charming. The museum, housed in a historic post office building across from Union Station, is full of interesting objects that illustrate the importance of a national mail system, including airplanes, train cars, handcuffs, uniforms, stamps, and the one-time unofficial mascot, Owney. After Owney died in 1897, postal workers rallied to have their beloved mascot preserved and you can visit him in the museum’s atrium.

Though small very entertaining, revisable museum, especially free No Touch Door Opener Tool and free stamps very nice. : )

Do not miss this museum! Out of all the national museums in DC, this is by far my favorite. No one would ever guess that a museum about the postal system would be so interesting, but the museum does a great job exploring all aspects related to the postal system. In the section that looks at delivery an entire Mack truck and mail trolley are on display for children and adults to explore! This museum is very interactive and makes an effort to let the visitor touch and feel everything. Perfect for persons of all ages!
