Do you want to be an unstoppable wilderness survivalist? Hell yeah you do! Of course you want to be able to fight a mountain lion with your bare hands and make fire with nothing but a freaking stick!
Sure, you could plan the same old family camping trip you did last year, or you could enroll yourself into one of the top outdoor survival courses in America and spend your summer learning how to be a total wilderness badass. Rambo headband not included.
1. Aboriginal Living Skills
Living Skills is one of the oldest "self-reliance" schools in the country, and each program was developed by barefooted celebrity outdoorsman Cody Lundin. The school offers a variety of classes to help you stay alive in pretty much any outdoor environment imaginable.
One of the most popular classes, Desert Daze, was created to teach students how to find shelter, water, rescue, and food if they ever lose their way in the wilderness. Students can also travel to eastern Arizona for the Winter Wonderland class, where students learn everything they need to know about surviving the cold.
All classes are broken up into either skill courses or adventure courses, with the option to take each privately.
2. Ancient Pathways
Ancient Pathways is prepared to teach you everything you need to know about desert survival and primitive technology. While I can't say that I have any idea what primitive technology is... it sounds awesome!
Your guide, Tony Nester, is a 20-year wilderness badass who has trained everyone from celebrities and reality television hosts to investment bankers in the art of survival. The courses range from Ultimate Survival Skills Camp to Knife-Only survival classes.
Many of the classes are extremely cost friendly, so if you're looking for an adventure in the $150 range, Ancient Pathways is your best bet.
3. Mountain Shepherd
If you want to learn how to evade captors in the woods, Mountain Shepherd offers some of the coolest survival classes around. Hidden Pursuit is a 4-day evasion class created to teach students the ins and outs of surviving, hiding, and escaping… Basically, they're going to teach you everything you need to know to survive the Hunger Games, which is pretty awesome.
4. Boulder Outdoor Survival School
BOSS is the oldest survival school in the world. They've been teaching folks how to stay alive since 1968 and offer some of the most intense training you'll ever find. Classes range anywhere from 3 to 28 days.
Located in southern Utah's mountains, BOSS' most popular class is a 28-day field class/challenge where you'll learn how to survive in the wilderness, both physically and emotionally. Students survive the outdoors for a month with "little more than a knife, a water bottle, a blanket, and a poncho," and many have finished the experience 20 to 30 pounds lighter than when they started.
5. Zombie Survival Camp
Finally, what better training could you possibly need when the zombie apocalypse finally comes? Zombie Survival Camp is going to teach you how to be a lean mean zombie killing machine.
You're going to learn how to shoot a variety of guns and crossbows, as well as learn how to properly identify a melee weapon good for smashing walker brains into mush.
The course is taught by certified firearms instructors, martial artists, and military professionals ready to teach you how to smoke an undead 50 different ways. So basically the exact people you'll want to know when the apocalypse finally arrives.
